News that the former boss of Award plc was back in optics emerged in optician last year (News, November 17). He has invested &\#163;2m to establish a company in Scotland called Provis to sell the lens via the internet and other means. At its launch the company said daysoftuv had benefited from soft edge technology invented by Provis to give a 'uniquely profiled lens-edge design' and claimed it was the world's highest specification one-day contact lens. It has now emerged that the design was also masterminded by Malcolm Louch, an optometrist registered in Salisbury. In addition, daysoftuv can be ordered by practitioners via the web at 20p per lens, and delivered to their premises or the patient's address. The website - www.daysoftuv.com - allows practitioners to order and pay in a range of currencies and keeps an order history so that repeat orders can be easily accessed. Mr Hamilton said: 'In establishing Provis the goal was not merely to produce a me-too contact lens, but to offer the highest specification, lowest cost and most easily ordered one-day lens in the world. 'By doing so, Provis believes that daysoftuv can strengthen the crucially important supervisory role of the optician in the prescribing and supervision of contact lens sales.'
