Discrepancies in eye cancer referrals

​Children with eye cancer and leukocoria are more likely to get a referral

Children with eye cancer who present with leukocoria are over two and a half times more likely to get an urgent referral for retinoblastoma than children who present with strabismus, the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) has found.

Figures released by CHECT to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2019 showed that among children presenting with just one symptom and subsequently diagnosed with retinoblastoma, 58% of those who presented with leukocoria received an urgent referral, compared to just 21% of those who presented with strabismus.
