DIY focus for EIS

THE EYECARE Information Service has been focusing on the dangers of DIY, one of the country's largest causes of eye injuries, as part of this week's National Eye Safety Week.

DIY retail chain Do It All joined in the campaign by staging a promotion in 143 stores highlighting eye safety throughout the week and offering discounts offered on safety spectacles and goggles. 'We are highly encouraged by this initiative as it is important that the issue is taken seriously by the DIY trade,' said an EIS spokesman. The EIS took over the campaign from the British Safety Council this year and decided to move away from the focus on eye injuries in the workplace which the BSC had previously championed, in an attempt to make the campaign more consumer-oriented. 'More than 20,000 eye injuries every year are due to DIY accidents in the home - that equates to one every 20 minutes and is more than three times greater than accidents reported in the workplace,' added the spokesman.
