EIS ready to deliver DIY message

The Eyecare Information Service this month delivered Eye Safety Week promotional packs to its members.

It is the first time the EIS has organised the Safety Week, which was previously run by the British Safety Council (optician, News, October 31 1997). The BSC pulled out of organising the week to concentrate on its core activity of promoting health and safety at work, rather than in the home. The aim of the week, which will take place between April 13-19, is to reduce the number of DIY-related injuries to the eye. There are more than 20,000 eye injuries a year of this type, ranging from minor splinters to injuries requiring removal of an eye. The promotional packs contain a poster, leaflets and a form so that members can order more publicity material to distribute to their patients. Health authorities and health boards are also being encouraged to take part in the campaign. An EIS spokesman said a substantial number of independent practitioners had already ordered more leaflets.
