This was one of the findings of a membership survey aimed at shaping the immediate future of the EIS, and a key pointer for the yet-to-be announced PR firm which is hoped to give the service a fresh impetus (optician, News, June 5). In all, 85 per cent of respondents wanted EIS to approach commercial sponsors, and a majority of these were happy to accept sponsorship from any source. A similar figure of 85 per cent stated they thought EIS's most important activity was the publication of its leaflets. Half of those who responded gave their comments on how EIS could improve. The largest number wanted it to produce leaflets on common ocular conditions. Others wanted it to be more involved in advertising. An 'overwhelming number' want to see the service continue as a public information service, according to the EIS. In total, 85 per cent of those who replied said it was for this reason they joined in the first place. Just over 16 per cent - 138 - of all members responded to the survey, the majority being independent practitioners. An EIS spokesman said: 'The survey will help us plan for the next 12 months and beyond.'
