Dispensing optician Shashi Obhrai has been erased from General Optical Council registers after she was convicted of actual bodily harm and threatening to kill a woman who had been trafficked from India (News 25.05.13).
The fitness to practise inquiry heard that Obhrai, who had been suspended since 2012, made an application to adjourn the hearing on the grounds that she intended to appeal her conviction, but the committee said that there was no appeal process in existence.
The registrant did not attend the inquiry on account of an appointment at a hospice where her husband is in residence.
The committee heard that after being trafficked and passed through several houses, being subjected to violence and sexual abuse, the woman came to live with Obhrai – who was made aware of her previous treatment. The committee said that despite this, the registrant forced her to work long hours while being fed only scraps and was locked in the basement of a garage overnight.
