A man told by an optometrist that he should not be driving has been jailed for 20 months and handed a three-year driving ban for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Sixty-one-year-old Abdul Hafiz from Barking left a 73-year-old man paralysed from the waist down following a collision in December 2017. Hafiz failed a roadside eye test and could only read a number plate from 4.1m – 16.4m short of the legal requirement of 20.5m.
Two months prior to the accident, Hafiz had been informed by his optometrist that he needed cataract surgery and was told not to drive until the procedure had been completed.
