Changes to the minimum medical standards for driving in the UK have now come into force - but concerns remain over their everyday enforcement.
The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed the changes (News 11.05.12) late last week, following a consultation period ended two years ago.
All drivers must still be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, with corrective lenses if necessary, the DfT said. They also required a binocular visual acuity of 0.5 (6/12), with corrective lenses if necessary, it confirmed.
However, drivers would not be required to have their eyesight tested as part of the application process for a car or motorcycle licence.
