The DoH is set to make a formal announcement next week that optometrists will be allowed to train to get independent prescribing rights for a broad range of therapeutic drugs, Optician has learnt.

The DoH is set to make a formal announcement next week that optometrists will be allowed to train to get independent prescribing rights for a broad range of therapeutic drugs, Optician has learnt.

Optician understands that Ministers have given their seal of approval for this measure and a formal announcement will be made on Tuesday to confirm this and the list of drugs is likely to be wider then first envisaged by the profession. The announcement is expected to confirm that the statutory process by which this can come about is expected to take until early 2008 as a change in law will be required.
