Spectrum Thea has launched Thealoz, a new eye drop solution for dry eye, described by the company as a new concept and approach to management.
The product contains trehalose (3 per cent), which Spectrum Thea said was a disaccharide existing in nature where physicochemical characteristics gave it protective, antioxidant and hydration properties. 'With this innovative mode of action, trehalose is known to improve water management in cells, to avoid corneal cell damage from dryness and consequently protects epithelium cell life in dry conditions.
'Pre-clinical studies show that Thealoz protects corneal epithelial cells from death by desiccation and keeps the corneal epithelial surface smooth in dry conditions.' The company added that in moderate to severe dry eye Thealoz significantly improved break-up time, fluorescein and rose bengal staining scores.
