Orthoptists from around the UK and Ireland gathered in Derby last month to hear the latest developments in low vision.

The British and Irish Orthoptic Society’s Low Vision Special Interest Group Conference included a workshop on eccentric viewing conducted by Cleon Hutton of the Macular Society and Nick Collins of Optima Low Vision Services (pictured).

Eccentric viewing training was being used by a third of the low vision clinics in attendance.

Collins said: ‘Eccentric viewing doesn’t improve your vision, it allows you to more effectively use the vision you already have. It’s not all about throwing lenses at people. If you simply look at something through the missing part of your vision, a lens just magnifies the problem.’
