A decision on whether to consider forcing drivers over the age of 75 to undergo regular eye examinations could be reached in the summer when ministers unveil plans for the review of the law governing the medical fitness of drivers.

Optician understands this is just one recommendation under consideration by ministers which originated from a report on road safety dating back to 2006. The report was compiled by external agency Risk Solutions on behalf of the Department of Transport (DoT).

It is understood that ministers have ruled out a maximum age for driving but are looking to rely on tightening up on checks on motorists over the age of 75.
