Elizabeth Smith obituary

Elizabeth Smith, a well known figure on the UK contact lens scene, has died.

Elizabeth Smith, a well known figure on the UK contact lens scene, died on July 23 after suffering a heart attack.

Smith first came to prominence as assistant to Gordon Jones during his chairmanship of the ACLM (1982-1987) when he helped to form the European Federation of National Associations of Contact Lens Manufacturers.

Friends described Smith as embracing the promotional aspect of this initiative with her 'characteristic vigour' and working tirelessly to help explain to British manufacturers the impact of European legislation.

She went on to become the ACLM's public relations executive. Later in her career, she also worked as a freelance adviser on public relations for other organisations, taking on specific projects for Aspect Vision Care, Contamac, the Eyecare Information Service (now Eyecare Trust) and even organising golf tournaments on behalf of Sauflon.
