Essilor has announced that it has been certified ISO 14001:2004 - 'the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems'.

The international lens company was awarded the certification by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) - 'the most reputable accredited provider for certifying third party audits and first choice provider for all major organisations'.

Essilor UK said it always sought to do the best for employees and stakeholders and was proud to be the first Rx lab within the Essilor group to receive this certification.

Essilor's head of quality and environment Julian Dobson led the project, which started in 2004. 'There are many potential environmental hazards and complex legislation related to optical manufacturing, although Essilor has always taken great care to ensure that the products we manufacture are environmentally friendly,' he said.

'Through the certification process we have become much more aware of the environment and through the implementation of new processes the company operates in a more cost efficient and environmentally responsible manner.'
