EU proposes fields test for drivers

All motorists face having to renew their driving licence every five years to ensure they have good vision under new European Union rules.

According to the Daily Mail, a directive is expected to come into force by 2013 which will require drivers to undergo checks that cover visual fields, twilight vision and records any sign of progressive disease. This move is set to replace the traditional test of reading a number plate at 20 metres.

Under the proposal, drivers must undergo an eye examination when renewing their licence either every five, 10 or 15 years. Helmer Schweizer of the European optical group EuromContact told the Daily Mail: 'The UK's 20-metre test is inadequate. It is not standardised. It is not scientific. It is not fair. And it is open to legal challenge within the EU.
