New EU driving licences that carry a driver's vision correction details coupled with compulsory eye tests are expected to significantly reduce the number of accidents and heighten awareness of eye health, delegates at a Federation of Manufacturing Opticians hosted Eurom 1 seminar were told.
During the recent meeting held in Windsor, delegates heard that new EU legislation, passed in 2006, is set to be introduced in member states from January 2011. According to Helmer Schweizer, president of Euromcontact, the new legislation will also bring earlier detection of cataract, glaucoma and other disorders, as drivers will be forced to have their eyes examined every five years for a commercial licence and every 10 to 15 years for a private licence.
