Damage to the earth's ozone layer means people are more susceptible than ever to solar radiation - but the majority of patients are none the wiser.
Figures presented in New York last month, attributed to Transitions, showed just 6 per cent of patients know about the relationship between UV exposure and eye conditions. This compared to 79 per cent being aware of the relationship between UV and skin conditions.
Eye care professionals in attendance at The Vision Council event were told that although they had much work to do in the area, they would be rewarded with healthier patients and sunglass sales.
Optometrist Dr Justin Bazan said: 'We know that there is a problem with the ozone layer and that more UV is reaching us.'
