Eye and mental health link highlighted

A practitioner shares how cataract surgery improved a patient's mental health

An optometrist in Wales has encouraged people to check that worsening vision has not hampered the mental health of elderly family members during lockdown.

Jason Scaife, director of domiciliary visits in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan at Specsavers, said he had seen patients who were reluctant to go to appointments and had struggled with deteriorating eyesight, including 75-year-old Beryl Close.

‘Beryl’s son, Mike, got in touch with us as he was concerned about his mum’s vision. She couldn’t read or see the TV and Mike was worried that it was affecting her mental health,’ he said.

During a home visit, Scaife identified cataracts in both eyes and referred Close for surgery. She has made a full recovery and there has been a noticeable change in her demeanour, Scaife added.
