A partnership between Hoya UK and Orbis UK aimed to raise £50,000 over three years to establish a Green Vision Centre in India.
The centre would provide eye health services to an estimated 100,000 children and adults via sustainable means through the use of solar panels, software and energy-efficient appliances.
Eye care at the vision centre would be affordably priced for low-income individuals or free care would be provided to those who cannot pay.
Rebecca Cronin, CEO at Orbis UK, said: ‘Educations and livelihoods can be severely impacted by a lack of access to quality eye care and small interventions can make a large difference.
‘Sometimes a simple pair of glasses is all it takes to help a child to see their books for school or support an adult in their work. Thanks to Hoya UK, this new vision centre will bring much needed eye care and treatment options to the doorstep of another community.’
Hoya’s fundraising activities in 2023 included the London Marathon, the Three Peaks challenge and contactless donation terminals in optical practices.
Alexandre Montague, CEO at Hoya Vision Care, said: ‘Improving vision over a lifetime is our mission at Hoya Vision Care. And for that reason, we are excited to partner with Orbis in India and beyond. This partnership takes us another step in the direction of closing the vision health gap, enabling everyone to experience the gift of sight.’
Hoya has also renewed its international partnership with Orbis for three years to create access to vision services for school children in India and provide training to eye care professionals through Orbis’ telemedicine platform, Cybersight.
