Eye care in Scotland surveyed

HIS recommended the government continued to boost optometry services

Health Improvement Scotland (HIS) published results of a survey carried out between June and August, which explored public perceptions of community eye care.

When respondents were asked where they would go if they had an eye problem, 39% said optometrist and 38% said GP.

Key sources of information about eye care included attending or phoning an optometrist (57%), online search engine (35%), NHS Inform website (27%) and GP or pharmacy (20%).

HIS recommended Scottish Government continued to increase awareness around the healthcare aspect of optometry services and its separation from retail aspects, as well as more messaging around optometrists being the first port of call for eye care concerns.
