Eye exam app Peek wins award

Smartphone eye exam app Peek (Portable Eye Examination Kit) has taken top honours in the digital category at the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year 2014 awards.

Peek was developed by a group of ophthalmologists, business experts and software specialists for what the organisation said were comprehensive eye exams in remote locations. It includes a mobile app and clip-on hardware to create a tool that can check prescriptions, diagnose cataracts and examine the back of the eye for disease, the developers said.

Other entrants in the digital category included the virtual reality gaming headset Oculus Rift and Dumb Ways to Die, an app created to promote safety around railways.
