Changes in the prices of the items in the ONS's annual inflation basket are used to compile the main measure of inflation, the consumer price index, and every year items in the basket are adjusted to match changing lifestyles.

The ONS's decision to drop sight tests from the basket reflects the increasing number of patients making use of free eye tests offered by practices such as Tesco Opticians (News 01.03.10).
