Fight for Sight gives award to Specsavers

Specsavers Opticians has become the first recipient of a specially commissioned trophy by optical charity Fight for Sight for its &\#163;40,000 donation.

Created so that the charity can honour companies and individuals 'who work tirelessly to raise money for the charity', the award was presented to Specsavers in recognition the group's donation. The money was raised by the high street optical group's auction and raffle at its 1999 national seminar, which was the largest amount ever raised for the charity at a single event. Specsavers also sells the charity's pinbadges through its stores. Chairman of Fight for Sight's trustees, Clive Stone presented the award to Specsavers founder Mary Perkins at the 'flagship' practice outlet, in London's Tottenham Court Road. 'This is the first trophy Fight for Sight has given and we hope Specsavers will feel as much pride in receiving it as we do in giving it,' he said. The trophy was inspired by Jean-Paul Roberts, a partially-sighted student at the Royal College for the Blind, and was handmade by glass sculptor Karlin Rushbrooke. Mr Roberts is studying art and took his love of football as the inspiration for his sculpture, which has been adopted by the charity as representing 'celebration and achievement'.
