Fitness to practise proceedings against a pre-reg optometrist, who is the subject of a police investigation following allegations made against him by a 14-year-old girl, have been put on temporary hold until next week.

The General Optical Council's fitness to practise committee has adjourned Harbhajan Singh's hearing to give him opportunity to obtain legal representation.

At the hearing on Monday the committee was being asked to impose an emergency 12-month interim suspension on Singh, who worked at the Harlow, Essex, branch of Boots Opticians, pending the outcome of a full disciplinary hearing.

The move follows allegations against him by the girl who underwent an eye examination last month and who, according to a letter read at the hearing, has claimed that Singh 'touched' her during the sight test. The hearing was told that Singh faces an ongoing police investigation into the allegations.
