An article highlighting the 'hundreds of pounds' that can be saved by purchasing glasses online instead of 'on the high street' was published in the Mail on Sunday.

Advising that 'spectacles are a lot cheaper if you avoid the high street', the article listed online retailers such as Glasses Direct, SelectSpecs, WantGlasses and GlassesMe and revealed that 'some ranges start from only £5'.

Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) president Jennifer Brower was quoted stating that a problem with buying frames online was that the wearer was not measured, that not one size of glasses fitted all and fitting was crucial. She said that this must be performed 'face to face' and opticians trained for three years during which they learnt about 'the specialist fitting of spectacles'.
