Glasgow Caledonian University’s highest graded optometry graduate, Nadine Joyce, was recently awarded this year’s OD Black Award.
The award, dedicated to the memory of the late Oscar D Black, whose family optometry practice C Jeffrey Black, merged with Lizars to form Black & Lizars in 1999, sees £500 donated to the top optometry graduate.
From Stevenston, North Ayrshire, the 2016 winner is set to begin her pre-registration optometrist placement close to home with the Ayr practice of Black & Lizars. The achievement will have particular resonance for Joyce, who chose to enter optics after being diagnosed with optic disc drusen as a child.
Joyce said: ‘I am delighted to have received this award. I am looking forward to the opportunity to take on new challenges and to work with some of the most advanced equipment available in the country, particularly the Optos ultra-wide imaging and 3D OCT scanner.’
Black & Lizars’ managing director, Michelle Le Prevost, presented the award. She said: ‘I am really pleased to present this award to Nadine for her outstanding work throughout her studies. I am sure the patients she will help and guide over the years will appreciate all the knowledge and skills she has acquired.’
