Gareth Hadley has been appointed as the new chair of the General Optical Council - taking up the post this week.

He replaces Brian Coulter who has acted as interim chair since the departure of Anna Bradley from the role in October 2012

Coulter said: 'Gareth brings a wealth of experience to the GOC from a wide range of organisations. His experience and expertise will ensure we keep public protection at the very heart of the GOC while further improving our efficiency and effectiveness as a regulator.'

Hadley's past roles included being commissioner of the Appointments Commission for the London, East of England and East Midlands regions, director of personnel for Her Majesty's Prison Service and employee relations director for British Rail.
