
The GOC has decided to suspend Sheffield-based optometrist Umar Masood from its register for four months after determining his fitness to practise was impaired.
A GOC Fitness to Practise committee determined that Masood failed to appropriately examine or assess patients’ eyes and recorded results for tests he did not perform.
As part of the evidence reviewed, video footage showed him skipping required external eye examinations while falsely documented normal findings, including noting ‘clear and quiet’ anterior chambers.
The committee ruled that his actions were dishonest and demonstrated a blatant disregard for patient safety and professional standards.
At the time, Masood was working as a locum optometrist at two Specsavers practises.
