GOC suspends student DO

The General Optical Council (GOC) has suspended Adeel Iqbal, an Oldham-based student dispensing optician from its register for acting in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner.

A GOC fitness to practise committee determined that Iqbal’s fitness to train was impaired due to misconduct.

While working at Ryde Specsavers, Iqbal was found to have behaved in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner by failing to maintain appropriate boundaries and making colleagues feel uncomfortable.

In October 2022, he breached GDPR and obtained a patient’s mobile number without her consent and began texting her. He also added the patient as a friend on Snapchat without her consent.

The committee determined that Iqbal’s actions were unprofessional and inappropriate because he failed to maintain appropriate boundaries and knew that such conduct was not suitable.
