However, the General Optical Council welcomed the Professional Standards Authority’s (PSA) annual performance review report after meeting 21 of the authority’s 24 standards.

The authority particularly praised the GOC’s enhanced CET scheme, citing independent research about the effectiveness of peer review.

Research showed around three-quarters of practitioners had made changes to their practice after participating in case-based peer review discussions as part of their CET. Most optometrists also reported increased self-confidence after taking part.
