General Optical Council chairman Rosie Varley has described as outrageous Glasses Direct's James Murray Wells' allegations that the optical body is 'riddled with commercial influence' and that elections to council were rigged.
She said his actions were a 'scurrilous attempt to bring the integrity of our election into disrepute'.
Last week James Murray Wells told Optician (News, September 29) that he would not stand for election to the GOC as it was 'rigged', allegedly by Specsavers boss Doug Perkins. The story followed accusations in the Mail on Sunday (September 24) accompanied by tables comparing Glasses Direct and Specsavers' prices.
