Wearable computers have been shown to have practical applications for the role of an optometrist conducting an eye examination.
Practitioners at Ferris State University in Michigan (MCO) have used the Google Glass augmented reality device during a sight test and embarked on a project to consider additional ways that the technology can be used in a testing room environment.
The device was used by MCO Professor Bruce Morgan and second-year intern Elyse Kleifgen. Professor Morgan showed how the device could be used to record patient interviews and how its search function could be used to confirm suspect eye conditions by comparing images with the patient’s eye at the same time. Kleifgen used Google Glass to perform checks on the patient and used video call functionally to obtain opinions from Professor Morgan, who could see Kleifgen’s view of the patient on a tablet while in another testing room.
