This week Cambridge Optical Group, which already controls Pringle and Paul Costelloe eyewear collections, announced that Harrods frames will join its portfolio in a 'major licensing agreement' between the ophthalmic supplier and one of the world's most recognisable brand names. The deal gives Cambridge Optical the global rights to manufacture and market frames carrying the famous Harrods insignia. The chairman of Cambridge Optical, John Hockney, this week called the agreement a licensing coup, and revealed that discussions with the Kensington retailer started last April. 'Harrods approached us last year at Optrafair specifically because they were looking for a leading British frame manufacturer with an in-house design team,' he explained. 'This is a major strategic partnership with arguably the most instantly recognisable brand in the world.' Harrods chairman Mohamed Al Fayed was just as pleased with the deal. 'I am sure Cambridge Optical will produce a range of products that will attract wide acclaim.' Cambridge Optical plans to unveil its designs for the collection to the profession at London's Eyefashion 2000 show (March 31-April 2), which will be held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. The European launch will take place in May, at Mido in Milan and the worldwide launch will follow.
