A Harrogate optometrist raised £1,300 for charity Fight for Sight by taking part in the Great North Run last month.

A Harrogate optometrist raised £1,300 for charity Fight for Sight by taking part in the Great North Run last month.

Andrew Elder Smith, 46, owner of AJ Elder Smith in Harrogate, said that his finish time was four minutes over his two-hour aim, but that the temperature was also 10 higher than expected.

'I didn't suffer any blisters - just mild sunburn. The whole day was an amazing experience and very well organised. If all the pledges are redeemed I will have raised over 1,300,' said Elder Smith.

'Having worked as an optometrist for 25 years I've seen all the great developments which have come out of research into eye disease and I felt it is very important to support continuing research - that was why I chose to raise money for Fight for Sight.'
