Qualifying as a dispensing optician from City College in 1982, she achieved a further contact lens qualification. Shadbolt practised at Steven Harris Opticians in Beckenham before becoming a lecturer and examiner.
She was elected to the board of the BCLA before suffering a recurrence of her illness. She is survived by her husband Tim.
Former colleague and optometrist Steven Harris said: 'Helen joined me at an important stage in the development of my practice and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to her.'
