Hewlett to leave DoH for employers' body

Eye health

David Hewlett, an important figure at the DoH's ophthalmic services unit, has been appointed as the new boss of optical employers' body FODO.
He replaces Bob Hughes as FODO executive director, who joined the AOP as chief executive after eight years with the Federation.
Chairman of FODO Brian Collison said he was delighted to welcome Hewlett to the organisation. 'David will be joining us from his current position as group head: ophthalmic and primary care dental services at the Department of Health.'
'He brings with him an in-depth knowledge of the sector, and significant experience of the detailed workings of both government and the civil service, providing FODO with a valuable insight as to how we can secure our future as an essential part of a wider health service.'
Collison added that Hewlett's career history 'illustrates that his skills are not limited to one field'.
'He has clearly demonstrated his abilities as a successful leader, communicator and negotiator. His grasp of the sector-specific issues such as legislation and the economic model of the business, and his approachable management style, mean that he will be immediately effective in his new role.'
Commenting on his appointment, Hewlett said: 'I am looking forward immensely to working with colleagues at FODO. I hope that the passion I have always brought to healthcare is evident from the contribution I have made to the creation of the primary care led NHS and the National Service Frameworks. I believe that the providers of the nation's eye care services have a great deal to be proud of and need to work in partnership with government and the NHS as equals, not supplicants. This is the message I look forward to delivering on behalf of FODO members.'
Paul Carroll, chairman of FODO's education and professional standards committee, said: 'I think this is fantastic news for the profession and the optical retail sector.
'The formidable range of skills and vast experience that David brings with him means that FODO will be in the strongest position to lead on the issues of the day. We are all looking forward to working with him.'
