FODO chief executive, Optical Confederation enthusiast and beekeeper David Hewlett suggests we can learn a lot from bees, their democratic decision-making and successful expansion as the optical sector moves towards delivering improved public eye health through community practices. It may sound like a ‘sweet’ number leading the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians (FODO) but there is a sting in the tail. No optical body can now afford to stand alone and, with major changes afoot in the NHS, they need to work hard together to influence government decision-makers on issues including GOS, commissioning enhanced services and ophthalmic public health, Hewlett says.
