History in the making

The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers marked its 375th anniversary this year, and there was further cause for celebration when the optician Awards were announced in May

In recognition of the SMC's role in training optical practice staff and technicians, along with its charitable work, and the fact that it was in its 375th year, the SMC was presented with the Supreme Achievement Award. The award presentation was made just a week before the SMC's Charter Day Luncheon at Mansion House and a service at St Lawrence Jewry-Next-Guildhall, which marked the anniversary. The profile of these events was raised by the attendance of HRH The Countess of Wessex in her role as Patron of the Vision 2020 appeal. The anniversary was marked further by the September educational day of lectures at City University, organised by Professor John Marshall, which attracted high-profile speakers who touched upon the historical significance of the Company.
