IAPB awards ‘Glasses of the future’ winners

Lama Albadeen, from Saudi Arabia and her winning design, Vision Friend

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) marked World Children’s Day (November 20) by revealing the winners of the ‘Glasses of the future’ competition.

The competition saw children around the world design the eyewear of tomorrow and eight-year-old Lama Albadeen from Saudi Arabia took home the prize with her design, Vision Friend.

‘I wanted to include a camera and sensors to detect obstacles, alerting users with sounds and vibrations to make life easier for people who are blind or have low vision to help them stay safe wherever they go,’ reflected Lama.

In the younger category, five-year-old Grace Retta from Kenya came out on top with her invention, A Friend for My Eyes.

Parenting expert and TV personality Jo Frost, one of the judging panellists, commented: ‘These designs not only showcase that children should be included in the global conversation regarding eye health but to also empower glasses wearers around the world.’
