Menicon is to launch its flat pack technology for packaging contact lenses in Japan this autumn. Speaking at the British Contact Lens Association's clinical conference, executive officer Toshio Matsushima told Optician the technology would be applied first to hydrogel daily disposable lens packaging and that silicone hydrogels were 'in the pipeline'. Flat pack technology was invented by Steve Newman, now Menicon's chief technical officer, at Igel and developed by Clearlab before its acquisition by Menicon. The ultra-thin foil packing flattened the lens during storage without adverse effects and maintained correct lens orientation, the company said.

Seeing is Believing, an initiative between the International Centre for Eyecare Education and Sightsavers, has been launched in Nigeria. The programme will deliver accessible and affordable eye care provision in two of the country's states. Over time it aims to establish a sustainable eye care system as a part of the state's health systems.
