Menicon packaging

Menicon is to launch its flat pack technology for packaging contact lenses in Japan this autumn. Speaking at the British Contact Lens Association's clinical conference, executive officer Toshio Matsushima told Optician the technology would be applied first to hydrogel daily disposable lens packaging and that silicone hydrogels were 'in the pipeline'. Flat pack technology was invented by Steve Newman, now Menicon's chief technical officer, at Igel and developed by Clearlab before its acquisition by Menicon. The ultra-thin foil packing flattens the lens during storage without adverse effects and maintains correct lens orientation, the company says.
