Andrew McCarthy-McClean explores why AI tools in eye care need to be held to the same standards as other medical interventions

A review of eye care devices powered by artificial intelligence (AI) has identified variation in the amount of evidence used for clinical performance.

Analysis by researchers at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology also found these devices lacked transparency about training data, including details of gender, age and ethnicity.

The study, which was published in NPJ Digital Medicine, examined 36 regulator-approved AI as a
medical device tools in Europe, Australia and the US from 28 manufacturers across different regions.

Lead author Dr Ariel Ong said: ‘AI has the potential to help fill the global gap in eye care. In many parts of the world, there simply aren’t enough eye specialists, leading to delayed diagnoses and preventable vision loss.
