In Focus: Optical bodies progress nuanced AI policy

An interim position on artificial intelligence (AI) in eye care has been published by the College of Optometrists. It highlighted the optical sector’s commitment to ‘safe, ethical and evidence-based adoption’, and the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency and access to care.  

In the position statement, the College recommended: clinical guidance around procurement of AI tools; responsible use of generally available large language models, such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, including vision language and rise language models; professional development considerations; and identified key priorities that needed further research for comprehensive policy and guidance.
