In Focus: NHS leadership change brings opportunity

The industry reflects on opportunities for optics to play a more central role in community eye care, following the appointment of interim NHS chief executive Jim Mackey. Emma Spencer reports

Following the resignation of Amanda Pritchard as NHS England chief executive, the Association of Optometrists’ chief executive, Adam Sampson, called for NHS England leadership to embrace the government’s three big shifts for healthcare and put primary care at the centre.  

‘We have heard from the Secretary of State and Lord Darzi that the NHS is broken and needs fixing urgently. We face a growing crisis of longer waiting lists, staff shortages and increasingly stretched resources. But we also know this is a moment where real change can happen,’ he said.
