A German inventor has won a coveted award for designing special spectacles which turn speech into signs to help deaf people communicate. Maxi Pantel fought off competition from 13 finalists to scoop the James Dyson Award and a £5,000 prize.

A German inventor has won a coveted award for designing special spectacles which turn speech into signs to help deaf people communicate. Maxi Pantel fought off competition from 13 finalists to scoop the James Dyson Award and a £5,000 prize.

The device uses sensors to interpret sign language into speech while cameras interpret speech back into sign language, which the user can see on a head-mounted display.
