Around half of the UK's 40 million motorists have not had an eye test in more than four years according to a survey.

Car insurance provider Swinton surveyed 2,000 customers and discovered that 28 per cent had not visited an optician for between four and six years, 16 per cent had not done so for between six and eight years, 10 per cent had not done so for between eight and 10 years and 6 per cent had not done so in over 10 years.

Steve Chelton, Swinton's insurer development manager, said: 'The tough financial climate means routine eye examinations are being neglected.
