Interim order placed on DO

A General Optical Council fitness to practise committee has suspended dispensing optician Lee Wilson for 18 months after it was found he had seen and fitted contact lens patients without having the registered speciality.

The committee heard Wilson, owner and manager of a practice, had fitted contact lenses under the supervision of optometrists working at the practice, but said this took the form of supporting the registrant in the event of any difficulties.

A committee statement said Wilson would have been fully aware of the necessary regulations as part of his contact lens theory training he had part-undertaken in 2008.

The committee said it hoped the matters involved could be resolved by the registrant well within the 18-month time frame, scheduling a review hearing for May 2012.
