Interview: Adapting to lifestyle changes

J&J Vision Care's Dr Kamlesh Chauhan talks about the recently launched Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day and Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal contact lenses

Mike Hale: How do these new contact lenses fit into the Acuvue portfolio of products?

Kamlesh Chauhan: Innovating to support evolving patient needs is at the heart of our organisation and something we will always challenge ourselves to do. The launch of Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day and Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal is more than a year in the making, following feedback from eye care professionals that patients are experiencing eye discomfort related to more demanding days and increased screen time. Using digital devices can lead to 60% less blinking, which can compromise the tear film, and can cause discomfort and feelings of dryness.1,2

Our Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contact lenses have a legacy of having never been beaten on comfort. What we have done with Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day is build on this platform to create a new lens that works harder for patients who are feeling the strain of more demanding days and increased use of digital devices.3

Firstly, our TearStable technology optimises our existing special wetting agent for better distribution throughout the lens and surface.4 Tear film stability is important to help maintain lubrication and lock moisture in and on the lens for comfortable contact lens wear.5 A stable tear film is also required for good vision. As your tear film breaks up, your vision becomes distorted, therefore you need your tear film to be stable between blinks. Secondly, we have introduced OptiBlue Light Filter technology, a technology that filters wavelengths of light in the blue-violet (HEV) range to help minimise light scatter and improve visual clarity.6

For patients with presbyopia, the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal lens combines these technologies with our existing Pupil Optimised Design, which ensures a more precise fit and clear vision at all distances in all lighting conditions.7,8

MH: How do these technologies perform to benefit patients in real life situations?

KC: Over the past few years, our lives have evolved and so have the demands on our eyes. Long days in an increasingly digital-dependent world means we blink less, which is causing a destabilised tear film, leading to feelings of dryness and tired eyes.1,2

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day is designed to deliver visual clarity and all-day comfort for patients navigating today’s modern lifestyles.9 Nearly 90% of heavy users of digital devices confidently reported a reduction in the feeling of tired eyes from using a computer or other digital device when wearing Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day versus Acuvue Oasys 1-Day.9

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal meets presbyopic needs with a combination of three powerful technologies; TearStable technology, OptiBlue Light Filter and Pupil Optimised Design. The contact lenses provide crisp, clear vision at all distances and in all lighting conditions.8 Across four clinical trials of patients wearing Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal, nearly 90% reported uninterrupted vision between and at all distances,8 while 94% reported all-day comfort8 and 94% reported clarity of vision while using a digital device.8

MH: Can you evaluate the findings of new global research conducted by Johnson & Johnson Vision as it relates to the new lens?

KC: The survey enabled us to get a broad picture of our reliance on digital devices and how this is affecting comfort levels and eye health. Our research found most people in the UK (81%) who wear lenses or glasses are using at least five different digital screens per day.3 That might sound shocking, but when you consider all the different devices we own now it’s not surprising.

More than two-thirds (67%) said the increased role of screens in modern life was negatively impacting their eye comfort, and 72% said they are concerned about the effects of blue light and want to screen their eyes.3 The vast majority of the individuals we surveyed (80%) said they would be interested in purchasing contact lenses that would help filter blue light.3

MH: Will marketing materials and company support be available in association with the new contact lenses?

KC: Yes, we will have marketing materials, but these will be tailored to each customer, and we’ll be working with them independently to find what suits them and their patient or practice needs. We will first be focusing on working with eye care professionals, educating them about the contact lenses, and further patient-focused materials will be available in the new year.
