The optometry department of the Dublin Institute of Technology has been awarded a €1.5m grant by the Irish government to help set up an optometry course in a university in Mozambique.
The course will be run in conjunction with the University of Ulster and ICEE (International Centre for Eyecare Education).
The money will help fund the development of a two tiered course, in which the first students will graduate as optometric technicians after two years.
Further students will graduate after four years with full degrees in optometry.
It is hoped the first undergraduates will be enrolled in February 2009.
