Funding worth £40,000 from the Economic and Social Research Council to investigate the communication skills of optometrists has been secured by The College of Optometrists and King's College London.

The project, which the College said stemmed from research which showed that patients were sensitive about discussing eye problems with optometrists, will aim to produce evidence-based learning materials.

'It is as important to ask appropriate questions as it is to actually deal with the information the patient supplies,' said the College.

Research partner Dirk vom Lehn of King's College London, who will lead the project, said: 'The project will produce and deliver a communication skills package for the benefit of all optometric practitioners.'
